Cost of burial forces cremation

Thursday 19 May 2011 « Back to news listings

A recent BBC news article reported on rising council burial costs. Devon woman Rosemary Bishop felt that she had no option but to cremate her mother-in-law, despite her mother-in-law’s desire to be buried alongside her husband in a double grave the family owned. Rosemary was expecting to pay the standard charge of around £725 set by Torbay Council, but was shocked to discover that the cost would be an additional £1000.

Despite her mother-in-law living in Torquay for over 90 years, a move into a nursing home in a neighbouring town two years prior to her death meant that the council classified the burial as being from outside the area, and therefore subject to the increased cost. Rosemary Bishop described how her mother-in-law would have been horrified at the additional cost and criticised the local authority.
