There are many heartfelt poems about death and grief which are shared in sympathy cards or read during funeral services. The poetry expresses our feelings in gentle rhyme more eloquently than we could master alone. There is a comfort in the soothing words, particularly for those who struggle to say what they really feel. Mary Elizabeth Fry's poem 'Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep' is particularly popular and focuses on love, death and moving on from the heartache of loss.

If asked to give a eulogy or reading at a funeral is poetry the best option? Perhaps your relative was a rock n roll fan and a verse from a Rolling Stones track would be more fitting? You could share a story or memories that will raise a smile or laughter amongst the heavy hearted people listening to you speak.

There is no right or wrong answer, it's a personal decision and a quick search on Google will provide inspiration ranging from traditional poems to modern verse or song lyrics. One thing is certain, when asked to say it with words; they don't necessarily have to be yours.
